Eye Lid & Under Eye Surgery

The medical term for removal of excess fat around the eye is blepharoplasty. It refers to the removal of excess fat and skin from above and / or below the eye resulting in a ' wide awake' more youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty

Maybe carried out to correct sagging or drooping eye lids ( upper blepharoplasty) or fatty pouches below the eyes ( lower blepharoplasty). The cause may be due to age, although some people have a pre-disposition to this condition. In some cases, it maybe caused by a medical problem and in severe cases, the lid may drop very low and effect ability to see ( Ptosis)

The eyes are protected by fatty pouches and soft tissue which has a high degree of elasticity to allow the eye to blink for protection as well as cleaning.

With age, the skin loses it's elasticity and the fatty protection which is held taught in younger eyes, creeps forwards producing ' bags' which can be below or above the eye or in both areas.

Removal of the fatty tissue around the eye is one of the most common cosmetic procedures carried out by Ophthalmologists who specialise in plastic surgery ( ocular plastics). It is advisable that eye surgery of this type be carried out by surgeons who are members of BOPSS ( British Oculo-Plastic Surgery Society). Mr Tristan Reuser was a member of the executive team of BOPSS and organised two scientific meetings.

Likewise surgery should only be carried out once any underlying medical reasons for the problem have been eliminated by an Ophthalmologist.

There are occasions when non surgical fillers are a more appropriate treatment than blepharoplasty. In these circumstances patients are reassured to know that Mr Reuser's experience in the use of fillers is recognised by fellow Drs who regularly attend his training courses.
