Refractive
Lasik
Laser Insitu Keratomileusis (LASIK)
The cornea is responsible for approximately 80% of the refractive power of the eye. Subtley changing the shape of the cornea can correct short and long sightedness (also known as refractive error). The technique involves making a flap in the cornea removing underlying tissue to re-shape and then replacing it, where it adheres almost instantly. The discomfort and dry eye sometimes associated with PRK (corneal surface technique) are NOT usually an issue with LASIK.
LASIK is quick, painless and the recovery rate is also rapid, with the benefits of surgery being apparent within hours (full benefits can take up to 48 hours).
How Does LASIK Surgery Work?
LASIK surgery is a quick and virtually painless refractive procedure performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure involves anaesthetising or numbing the eye with drops, a thin flap is then made in the cornea (the front of the eye) using a precise instrument called a microkeratome. The corneal flap is folded back allowing the surgeon to reshape the cornea using a laser. Once the cornea has been reshaped, the corneal flap is replaced into its original position where it will heal naturally without the need for sutures or stitches. LASIK surgery takes only a few minutes to perform per eye.
What Results Can I Expect From LASIK Surgery?
The final results of LASIK surgery will vary from patient to patient given the unique nature of each patient's eyes. Current statistics show that LASIK success rates can be as high as 98%, with patients achieving vision of 6/6 or 20/20 or better without the aid of glasses or contact lenses.
