Monofocal lenses have been used in cataract surgery for over 50 years.
These implants offer a good outcome for patients who wish to see distance objects without spectacles but who are happy to wear their glasses for reading. There are less side effects associated with monofocal implants than there are with lenses that offer spectacle freedom.
All patients will however need to wear glasses for reading and may also need glasses for other tasks such as using a computer. This applies to people who may not have previously worn glasses (usually younger patients).
Monofocal lenses are used routinely in the NHS. At the Midland Eye a choice of lenses are available, which includes multifocal, accommodative and custom match options.
