Blepharoplasty Procedure & FAQ's
After anaesthetising the area an incision is made in the natural crease of the eye lid (for upper blepharoplasty) and in the lash margin (for lower).Excess fat and tissue is then removed, and muscles tightened / repositioned) before closing the incision with fine temporary sutures.
The incision can extend to the corner of the eye, but will be barely visible within a sort period eventually becoming unoticible in most cases.
How long is the procedure?
This depends whether upper and lower blepharoplasty are taking place at the same time. the procedure usually takes between 1 1/2 and 3 hours.
Will I feel any pain?
The procedure is normally carried out under a local anaesthetic with sedation as opposed to a general anaesthetic (which has associated risks).
Local anaesthetic is extremely effective and when combined with sedation, often results in patients falling asleep during the procedure. It would be normal to feel pressure but you should not feel any pain after the aneasthetic has been administered.
What can I expect after surgery?
Your eyes will feel drier than usual and you will be given drops to resolve this. The area surrounding the eye will be red and there is likely to be some swelling and possibly bruising. This lasts 1-2 weeks.
Normal activities may resume after approximately one week. More details of post-op care following eye lid / under eye surgery ( blepharoplasty) can be found HERE
Is Blepharoplasty suitable for everyone?
Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed by ophthalmologists who specialise in ocular plastics. It is suitable for the majority of people who suffer excess tissue around the eye, but is not suitable for everyone. There are some medical conditions which would be made worse by the treatment which is why a full assessment is needed.
I have drooping eyebrows and eyelids, will blepharoplasty solve both problems?
A full assessment would determine whether a brow lift is needed as well as or instead of blepharoplasty. The two treatments can be carried out at the same time should both be needed for the desired outcome.
